THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON MENTAL HEALTH

The Impact Of Social Media On Body Image And Mental Health.
Undoubtedly, social media is a part of humankind with billons of people using it daily but as with any forms of transformative technology, it has both positive and negatives. We see harmful effects, such as individuals developing negative body images because they compare themselves to what they are observing and experiencing through social media . We all have a body image. It's personal but can be heavily influenced by others people ideas and surroundings. Body image has four aspects to consider.
1 perceptual : The way you see yourself is not always a correct representation of what you actually look like
2 Affective : What you like or dislike about the way your body looks. It's a focus on appearance, weight, shapeand body parts.
3 Cognitive : The way you think about yourself, which ties to what you believe about yourself.
4.Behavioural : Actions that you take Or things you do that are directly related to your appearance. Body image also influences self-esteem, self-acceptance and someone's general outlokk on life. Which can also impact positive or negative viewpoints. When someone body image takes on more negative perceptions, they are kore likely to be influenced by their environment. They may base their self-esteem on comments or judgments made by friends, family and social media.it can also begin to affect their mental health.
Unfortunately, social media is yet another form of harmful messaging that continues patterns within our society that convey unrealistic expectations around body image standards . Media has always tried to influence what the ideal or preferred body looks like. It's a dealdly form of sterotyping that people aspire to that seriously affect somones mental health.
Social media often objectifies bodies and can shape people's relationship with food, fashion and fitness under the guisc of inspiration. Even seemingly wellintented movemenat that appear periodicallu have an undercurrent of toxicity and diet culture as they lack context
We should note that social media platforms can deliver mixed results for LGBTQ, BIPOC and people with both visible and invisible disabilities they are generally viewed as unsafe becuse of the prevalence of hatefull messages and harrasamment. Still youth express how social media can be liberating to find people who are positive influeness
Some companies have taken steps in this direction by bannning advertisement for weightloss products and promoting body postive content on their platforms

The rise of social media platforms has brought a new set of challenge for individuals, particularly when it comes to their body image and self-esteem
Social media platforms are filled with images of seemingly perfect bodies, which can be harmful to our self-esteem. Studies show that exposure to these images can lead to negative body image and decreased self-esteem the constant comparison to these unreaslistic standards can create feelings of inadequate and anxiety.
Moreover, social media can also reinforce harmful body stereotypes. For example, on Instagram, models and influencer who fit the mold of the ideal body type are often rewarded with followers and likes. This create a narrow definition of beauty that's excludes individuals who don't fit these standards, leading to further marginalization and discrimination further more social media can also contribute to the development of body dysmorphia body dysmorphia is a mental health condition in which individuals are preoccupied with perceived flaws or imperfectios in their appearance. The constant exposure to images or perfect bodies on social media can lead individulas to belive that their own bodies are flawed leading to a distorted self image and potentially dangerous behaviours such as excesssive dieting pr excersice
Body image found that social media use was associated with body dissatisfaction, body survellance and internalizatoon of thin ideal body standards among both men and women
Social media can be a significant contributions to the development of negative body image however social media can also be used as a tool to empower individuals and promote body positivity. Many individuals and groups have started using social media to challenge harmful beauty standards and promote a more inclusive definition of beauty social media cam also be used to share stories of body acceptance and celebrate all the body types
Exposure to body positive content on social media can improve vody satisfaction and self-esteem. When social media platforms were used for social support and connected ness, rather than for appearance related purposes itvwas associated with better body image and self-esteem among adolescent girls. Its important to recongnize that social media is not ingerently good or bad but rather a tool that can be used in both positive and negative ways therefore it's up to us to use meadia in a responsible and mindfull way. We can do this by unfollowing accounts that make us feel inadequate or unhappy with ourselves and instead following accounts that promote body positivity and self love
We can also limit our time on social media and engage in activities that boost our self-esteem such as exercise or spending time with loved ones. Moreover social media companies have a responsibility to ensure that their platforms do not promote harmful beauty standards or contribute to the development of negative body image
